Description

This is a wood-fired #2 stoneware jug from E.L. Farrar, Iberville, Quebec.

Maker’s mark is imprinted on jug: E. L. FARRAR POTTERY WORKS IBERVILLE (final portion not possible to distinguish by may be PQ)

Jug measures ~14-3/4 high x ~9-1/4″ in diameter at base.

The E.L. Pottery Works was started by Ebenezer Lawrence Farrar in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, who passed away in 1857 after entering in to partnership with brother George. The operation continued under George with involvement of his sons including an Ebenezer Lawrence Farrar who would have been a nephew to the founder. After fire destroyed the Saint-Jean plant in 1876, operations were moved to a plant in Iberville. The pottery operated under the Farrar name until 1926 when it was sold, eventually closing in the early 1930s.

Based on the know history the jug which bears the Iberville mark is believed to have been made between 1876 and 1926.

The jug has a couple of indentations in the side wall which would have been manufacturer’s defects. There are also 3 small chips in the sidewall. Otherwise the jug is in excellent condition for it’s age.

A great piece of Canadiana stoneware/pottery, seldom seen in the west, to add to your collection.

Asking $215 OBO.
