There are many fashion schools and sewing studios in Canada/USA/Europe/Asia, but none is as unique or as extraordinary as VSC. We offer the most flexible schedule available anywhere. As a result, our clients enjoy a more balanced study/work/play lifestyle, where they can pick and choose their own day and time for all their lessons, at their convenience! Plus, all our clients are taught privately ‘One-On-One’. At VSC, we don’t make our client waste time preparing their own lesson during class like every other fashion school and sewing studio, instead, our fashion instructor prepares our client’s lessons individually and customizes classes to meet the needs of each client, so they can learn more productively, efficiently and effectively ‘One-On-One’.
Whether it is domestic or industrial sewing, pattern drafting, French draping, or grading – this is a valuable practical life skill to learn and invest in. When you learn to sew, draft or drape, it is important to be fully aware that every lesson SHOULD be taught visually and 100% hands-on, ‘One-On-One’. It should not be taught in a group setting (everyone learns at a different pace and has different abilities, which means there are always one or two students holding up the entire class while everyone has to wait their turn to get help, which means you are also wasting time you paid for waiting for help). Don’t get stuck or stalled in a classroom of 6 to 30 students, where you can’t learn to sew, draft or drape at your own pace because there are simply too many students in the class AND you are not getting the full, undivided attention of the instructor, despite the money you paid and invested!
Today, almost everyone has a degree or a diploma, but the problem is that most people do not have real technical skills, which is why many graduates are struggling, and having a challenging and difficult time finding work that is well paid or even related to their degree/diploma. Too many fashion institutions are teaching just the basics and nonsense trashy courses. However, in this modern, competitive age, the basics are just not enough to get your foot in the door. Schools are focusing too much on art, theories, exams, thesis, Mickey Mouse projects, nonsense and trashy courses that have no real practical use in the fashion industry. Fashion institutions are full of hype, but they have zero substance when it comes to providing their graduates with a strong foundation in technical skills. Ironically, many fashion graduates and current designers, these days, do not have the capacity, ability, knowledge, skills or experience to fully draft or French drape or grade, cut, sew and finish a complete professional garment in three hours, if they are being tested on the spot, according to the fashion industry’s international standards. It is quite shocking to see an abundance of fashion institutions that are not preparing their students to meet or exceed the industry standards. A fashion degree/diploma is largely worthless, if you do not have real technical skills and experience to back it up. Currently, more and more employers are using the technical skills test on location to select their candidates for the positions they applied for. Because fashion design is still, and always has been, based on technical trade skills, more employers than ever before are looking to hire skilled workers and a degree/diploma is no longer a requirement to work in the fashion industry. Fashion schools are selling degrees and diplomas left, right and centre up to $150,000/student!
The worst kept secret of all, and this has been going on for decades, is that many fashion universities and colleges will accept literally anyone who is willing to pay their hefty tuition fees, especially international students. It is extremely difficult for many foreigners to immigrate to North America to live and work. Many fashion institutions have created a backdoor route for foreign students to enter Canada or the United States through their schools, by reliance on study visas. Once a student arrives in the country with a study visa, they can extend their visa and, eventually, apply for permanent resident status, which allows them to work and live permanently in their chosen country. This is almost a form of bribery, which many fashion institutions do not want to mention on their web site or social media platform. Students are buying their way into the country through tuition fees. The fashion schools do not care whether these students fail in the fashion industry because they are fully aware that many of their clients just want a way into the country and, in return, the schools get lots of tuition money from their international students.
At Vancouver Sewing Classes (VSC), we teach and mentor our clients to become professional fashion designer entrepreneurs or skilled workers, so they can design garments, draft commercial flat patterns, French drape, grade commercial patterns, manage industrial sewing, prepare Technical Packs, and produce samples and their fashion production line in Southeast Asia, professionally. Our fashion design programs are intensive, technically challenging and focus purely on 100% hands-on technical skills training to meet and exceed international standards. We help, train and prepare our clients, at the very early stage of their learning, to develop all of the essential technical skills to design, draft, drape, grade, cut, sew and finish each garment in three hours, on a daily basis, so they can become an experienced and efficient well-rounded fashion designer or skilled worker. We teach all of our clients important industry tricks of the trade, to keep them competitive and ahead of the pack. We invest more time than ever in the practicum than regular traditional fashion design institutions, to keep our clients sharp, as well as helping them to gain more extensive experience in all facets of technical design and garment construction. Therefore, if you really want to think outside of the box, and get further ahead in life than your friends, peers and competitors, early technical skills training and preparation is what you really need to succeed, not your degree/diploma!
