For many of us,
financial independence, self-reliance, and being our own boss are integral
parts of the American Dream – integral parts of our heritage. But,
in these uncertain times, money is really
tight and, in some communities, jobs
are really scarce. Financial independence seems out of reach. There is a
lot of talk and a lot of blame about stimulus packages and job
creators. None of it seems to make any sense, and NONE
of it seems to be helping you or your family RIGHT NOW. The thought of starting your own business and
being your own boss may seem absurd or foolish.
But is it? And how would you do
it? The answer may surprise you: Hot Dogs.
What? Hot Dogs? How?
Through the years, many myths and legends have been told about the origins of the term “hot
dog”, including a sports cartoonist with a spelling problem, but the author of
the term is unknown. What is known is that Charles Feltman, a
German immigrant and pie vendor, began selling hot sausages – later he added
the bun – from his pie cart on Coney Island, New York around 1867. He sold 3,684 in the first year.
By 1893, hot dogs were so popular that the St. Louis Browns began selling them in their
baseball park. Over the years, Charles Feltman’s business grew to include a hotel, food stands, restaurants, and amusement rides for his patrons.
When Mr. Feltman died in 1910, the business that he started selling only pies and
hot dogs on the boardwalk was worth over $1,000,000.00 which is equal to more
than $21 million by today’s standards. To date, exactly when and who first coined the term, “hot dog” remain unclear; but, what is clear is that there is money to be made from selling them! Vendors and customers both love hot dogs for the same reasons that they have loved them for hundreds of years:
1. They’re tasty,
2. They’re inexpensive;
3. And, they’re as much a part of our American
heritage as baseball and apple pie.
So, NO, starting your own business, creating your own job or just generating some extra cash
right now is not absurd. It’s not foolish. It makes real sense, and with the , you can
make it happen.
